Our Story
A note from Sophie
A note from Sophie
Hi, I'm Sophie, co-founder of Philo Sophie.
Our name comes from philosophy, which I studied in college. Philosophia is Greek for "love of wisdom," and its oldest question is a simple one: how do you live a happy life?
It was a question I thought about a lot in the years following graduation. I moved to New York for a job in finance, and on paper, everything was set. But after a while I didn't feel very happy. Something was missing.
One of the most influential philosophers of the last century, Hannah Arendt, wrote that the things we make are what give our world its permanence. I think most of us feel that pull: the wish to leave a piece of ourselves behind. For me, that desire became Philo Sophie.
Fashion has always been part of my life, from bonding with my mom to endless conversations with friends and co-workers. I chose handbags for their longevity and sentimental value. Most of us own a closet full of clothes but far fewer bags, each chosen carefully or gifted by someone we love. Some of my most cherished bags were my mother's first.
So I made something I thought women like me would want to carry: beautifully made, a little playful, and entirely their own. I hope it makes you happy.

Co-founder, Philo Sophie
How it started
Two strangers, a tech incubator, and one alpaca farm. This is how Philo Sophie came to be.
-
Summer 2024
A match
Two women in New York with entrepreneurial aspirations matched on Y Combinator's co-founder platform. Our first meeting was at Birch Coffee.
-
September 2024
The alpaca farm
We had an idea for alpaca handbags and drove four hours to an upstate farm for research. By day's end, the idea had died. But our commitment solidified.

-
Early 2025
Research and development
Sketches, leathers, hardware, and a lot of questions. Our first design began to take shape.

-
Summer 2025
First samples
The first prototype in our hands. The complicated structure drove us, our manufacturer, and our budget a little crazy. But it was love at first sight, and we were determined to make it work.

-
Fall 2025
Into production
After almost a year of prototyping, our first design goes into production.

-
Winter 2025
Prepping for launch
A crash course in everything else: design packaging, shooting a campaign, filing taxes.

-
Spring 2026
Launch
Our spring collection arrives, sells out, and appears in Vogue China. The weekend after launch, we drive around Manhattan to hand-deliver our first orders.

-
Summer 2026
Round two
Lessons learned, we get back to work: refining the construction, exploring new textures and colors, and investing in the brand.
-
Fall 2026
Now
Our second collection is underway, adding new textures in suede, calf hair, and nubuck. We hope one finds its way to you.
